What Happened to the Grape Lady?

grape lady

If you have ever tried to kill some time on the internet browsing through the countless viral videos you may have come across the epic fail video we like to call the “Grape Lady”. The woman we now all know as the Grape Lady, was a reporter from Atlanta Georgia’s new station MyFox Atlanta by the name of Melissa Sander.

All the way back in 1998 Melissa Was on site at Chateau Elan Winery and Resort located in Braselton, Georgia for an interview specifically showcasing their grape stomping competetion. It was said the producers thought it would be a good idea to film an interview on the grape stomping stand. Melissa agreed upon the competition and was supposedly the one who suggested they flip the stomping platform around, facing the side without the protective railing. She thought this would help the interview be seen clearer on tv.

This was a crucial mistake by Mrs. Sander, as we all know what ends up happening. When we actually see the interview its apparent that Melissa is not too excited by the feeling of grapes on her bare feet you hear her say “oh disgusting!”. The woman she is interviewing goes on to explain how the contest works and Mrs. Sander yells out Stop! This is the Moment of her crucial mistake. The Grape lady decides to get a few extra stomps in after the competition was stopped. You could call it cheating but one thing is certain, she suffered the consequences. Melissa loses her balance on the stage, falls of and does a belly flop right onto solid ground. The screams she makes have been compared to dying walruses and cows giving berth from found comments  and honestly its what made this video so famous.

The pure rawness of this clip is what makes it so perfect. Even though the video didn’t blow up on the internet until 2006 and it was said that local embarrassment was enough to make an impact on Mrs. Sander and her career. Sometime after the incident Melissa left her Atlanta reporting Job to take a more low key role as a Weekend Meteorologist in Albany, New York.

It’s now 2012 and it has been quite some time since we have heard anything about the Grape lady. She no longer works for the news team in Albany and as far as anyone knows she is trying to live a low key life out of the spotlight. Many people have tried to find her where about’s but have had little success.

The last public statement we’ve gotten from the grape lady was through a phone interview with a online video website. The interviewer was playing with her and almost making fun of her for what happened. Melissa responded that the incident was very embarrassing for her and more importantly she was also hurt quite badly. She said she broke several ribs and was forced to be in and out of the hospital for several weeks to check on her progress. She also said that her initial reaction to the fall was she was in so much pain that she thought that she might actually die. She says that she has also watched the video online and looked at some of the comments that people left and finds it sickening that people could be so insensitive to what happened to her.

The fact is the power of the internet will always prevail. The Grape Lady falls video has become one of the most popular “epic fail” videos in internet history and has been flooded all over the internet. Although many members across many different video sharing sites have uploaded the clip, the member on youtube yankeesfan22vt who uploaded the video back in 2007 is the owner of the most viewed clip. The video now has over 11,000,000 views. According to yankeesfan22vt still today in 2012 the video receives around 20,000 views a week. With that the legend of the grape lady will only become stronger. It’s too bad for Mrs. Melissa Sander on the humiliation she suffered but at this point all we can do is sit back and laugh at one of the funniest videos of all time.

It’s too bad she was so affected by the fall. If she would have just laughed with everyone she could have potentially capitalized on the media attention, etc! I feel bad for her.

This is what happens when you have no sense of humor, and you take yourself waaaay too seriously. If (after she recovered) she had just laughed it off, she’d still be working. Instead, she is in seclusion over a video most people don’t give a rip about.

  3. Thomas says:

I’m guessing she just got the wind knocked out of her when she was saying “I can’t breathe! I can’t breathe!” But never the less, this was still a hilarious video!

  4. Jess says:

Just saw this clip re-enacted/mocked at the very end of the movie, “Wanderlust” (in theaters now) with Jennifer Anniton and Paul Rudd. I bet the video surges in popularity again because of it!!

Every person has failed at one time or another. Mrs. Sanders is a professional and a very good reporter who should not let this incident define who she is!
Hopefully, she will spin this into a positive and we will see more of her.

Melissa Sander: don’t quit your passion over this. Of course it was painful and embarrassing for you at the time and long after, but that is because you chose to make it so. If you don’t care, people won’t laugh at you anymore. A person who can laugh off their biggest mistakes will always win back the admiration of their peers. I admit, I laughed until it hurt when I saw this video. But I don’t think any less of you as a person as a result. Who hasn’t done something stupid? We are all humans. Stephen Hawking goes to strip clubs. People who take themselves too seriously miss out on a large part of life. I’m sad to read this event made you reclusive. You should not allow embarrassment to dictate your decisions in life. Who cares what people think! It’s no fun making fun of somebody who finds their flaws funny as well. And think of it this way: millions of people know you and got pleasure from you. That’s more than 95% of the world will ever achieve.

I don’t really see why she’d get so embarressed. it looked very painful, but it is a reason that people laugh of this video clip, because it is funny.
    Deal with it.
Quitting her job was stupid. she should go back if she really liked that job.

What she tried to do was to be funny on the video and steal an extra few seconds after time was up. This was unprofessional and unfortunate and she paid for it. I can’t believe she is responsible for there not being a protective barrier. How ironic. Also, shout out to Maya

melissa i DO feel sorry for you. i love the fail meme but i never thought this was funny. you were losing your balance, you were doing what is called festination, running or hurrying to try and keep your balance. its usually associated w/parkinson’s but believe me anyone not on ice who loses balance will do it. get back in the game u have a fan here. john philly
